27.08.2004 Rel WCC leader recognizes "prophetic role" of churches in Korean unity and peace
"Churches are called to play a prophetic role in the promotion of justice, peace and reconciliation in both North and South at this critical point in Korean history," stated WCC central committee moderator Catholicos Aram I of the Armenian Apostolic Church (Cilicia) in Seoul, as the WCC executive committee adopted a declaration focusing on Korean reunification.

The WCC executive committee meeting in Seoul from 24-27 August has deplored the ongoing humanitarian disaster and forced displacement of civilians in Western Sudan, and has urged the African Union and the United Nations to provide for an international peace-keeping force, the investigation of war crimes, and the full deployment of independent observers to monitor the ceasefire and human rights in the region. South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun has expressed his strong appreciation of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the ecumenical movement for its "fundamental assistance" in support of human rights and democratization in his country. World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia has recognized the dynamic growth of Christianity in Korea and Asia, and has appealed to Asian churches to take new responsibility in the global ecumenical movement.
