03.02.2005 Rel Immediate relief, sustainable reconstruction: Ecumenical leaders reflect on the tsunami catastrophe
Nearly two months ago, a tremendous earthquake off the coast of Sumatra caused powerful tsunamis to hit coastal stretches of South East Asia and East Africa. The trail of devastation left over 200,000 people dead and more than half a million injured, and emergency relief was provided almost immediately by governments and organizations around the world. Looking back at the weeks just after the tsunami, we can attempt a first assessment of the churches' reactions and the solidarity shown by people and countries not themselves affected. We can also attempt to make recommendations for sustainable reconstruction work from the churches' point of view. Read more

"What is the magma within religions that can erupt so suddenly and brutally?" This is one of the questions raised at a panel discussion on "International ethics, religious conflicts and peace" at the fifth World Social Forum (WSF) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Organized by a global ecumenical coalition that includes the WCC, the panel explores the role of religion in conflicts, and seeks to identify resources within religion for overcoming violence. 27.01.2005 Rel Spiritual Rebellion: Interview with Leonardo Boff
"Is it possible to live calmly and happily when you know that two-thirds of human beings are suffering, hungry and poor?" The Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff, one of the founders of liberation theology, believes that the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth are real offences for any theology which struggles to bring about more justice. Boff was one of the guests at the World Forum for Theology and Liberation (21-25 January, Porto Alegre, Brazil). In this interview, given in German, he speaks about the prerequisites for a theology committed to social change and about his confidence that change is possible. Read more

In a joyous procession of hope after the opening worship service of an ecumenical youth event preceding the World Social Forum (WSF), some 50 young people dance, clap and sing Por isso vem (God calls us for a new moment, so come and join the circle!) - a Brazilian song of hope for a better world. "The other world we are thinking of is the one we have, not a world beyond," said Rev. Orlando Santos de Oliveira. The primate of the Episcopal Anglican Church of Brazil was speaking at the opening session of a theological forum on the theme of "Theology for another possible world". Therefore "The only possible theology is one that engages with a liberating God on a concrete pastoral base, in dialogue with new religious and social movements and the society we live in," de Oliveira declared. 19.01.2005 Rel Ecumenical presence at the World Social Forum: speaking with an authentic alternative voice
"Affirming life in dignity: enhancing justice and rights in a globalized world" is the overall theme for the World Council of Churches' (WCC) participation in the 5th World Social Forum taking place 26-31 January in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Amongst others, a panel on women's spirituality and dignity and their key role in resistance, a seminar dealing with peace and reconciliation, and a panel on ecological debt will be offered by the WCC.
